What is SideUp?
A flexible benefits platform for UK employers. Your team gets one SideUp card for tax-free benefits, Lifestyle budgets and marketplace discounts, and you get one place to run it all, with eNPS surveys, recognition and HR and payroll integrations built in.
What's the difference between Tax-Free and Lifestyle benefits?
Tax-Free benefits, like the Homeworking Allowance, DSE Eyecare or Work-Related Training & Tuition, follow specific HMRC exemptions, so there's no Income Tax or National Insurance when the conditions are met. Lifestyle benefits, like Wellbeing & Fitness or Leisure & Connection, are taxable, but give your team complete freedom to choose what matters to them.
How much can we save?
Every pound you give as a tax-free benefit avoids employer National Insurance, currently 15%, and reaches your employee in full. A basic-rate taxpayer would keep around £72 of £100 paid as salary, but the full £100 as a tax-free benefit. Your exact saving depends on which benefits you offer and your team's tax position.
Can employees be reimbursed if they pay themselves?
Yes. Most spending happens on the SideUp card, but if a provider doesn't take cards, or someone pays before their card arrives, they can upload a receipt in the app and be reimbursed from their budget once it's approved. The same tax rules apply as if they'd paid with the card, so tax-free benefits stay tax-free when they meet the HMRC conditions.
Does SideUp work with our HR and payroll systems?
Yes. Connect your HR system to keep your team list up to date automatically, or add people manually. At the end of each month, SideUp gives payroll what it needs, with tax-free and taxable amounts kept apart.
How does setup work?
Add your employees, choose your benefits and budgets, and decide how your company funds them. SideUp then invites your team to the app, and each person's card is issued once they've completed onboarding.
How quickly can we go live?
Quickly. How long it takes depends on your company, but it comes down to three things: setting up enrolment, uploading your employees, and communicating the programme to your team in the right way.
What is the SideUp Marketplace?
A network of independent partners. Local businesses such as cafés, gyms and shops can offer SideUp members discounts and freebies, and experts such as HR consultancies, bookkeepers and training providers are available to your company. It's an optional extra, so you and your team use it as much or as little as you like. Each partner is an independent business and sets its own offers.
Can we see what our team actually values?
Yes. Run eNPS and pulse surveys, see which benefits are used and requested most, and adjust your programme based on what your people tell you.
Is SideUp compliant with HMRC rules?
Each tax-free benefit is built around its own HMRC exemption, with separate pots and limits tracked automatically, and Lifestyle benefits kept apart. Our benefit pages explain each rule in plain English. They're a summary, not tax advice, so we always recommend confirming your arrangements with your tax adviser.
